Can You Mix Crystals Together?
You can absolutely mix crystals together. People tend to create combinations based on shape, color, or metaphysical properties.
Can you mix gemstones together?
We gave away the answer already with our intro... but that's kind of our thing.
We don't think you should have to read a whole book to find the answer to a question.
But, to be safe, we'll state it again. It's completely fine to mix gemstones together based on their shape, color, or properties.
Once you start collecting crystals, you'll reach a point where you can't avoid mixing gemstones together. You'll have too many!
It's pretty common for us to see photos from visitors who have their crystals piled around the base a plant.
We also see people who line the exterior of the bathtub with crystals when they take a bubble bath.
Avoid Putting Crystals In A Bag Together
Crystals all have different levels of hardness, based on the Mohs scale of hardness, so you should have them hitting each other.
Putting all your crystals in a bag together is going to result in something getting scratched.
And more like, a lot more than one "something" is going to get marked up.
Any crystals with a low level of hardness can be scratched by crystals. Raw crystal especially, but even tumbled Quartz can scratch!
Which crystals can you combine?
At the risk of being hypocritical (because we're about to discuss which crystals NOT to mix together), you can combine any crystals you want.
Think of it like plants.
Can you put any plants next to each other? Yes!
Do some plants pair better than others... also yes!
There are no rules when it comes to combining your crystals.
Do you want to sort them by color like we did with M&Ms when we were little?
Go for it!
Do you want to have all your crystal obelisks together and your pyramids separated?
Do it!
Do you want to separate your raw crystals from your tumbled stones?
Don't do it, that's very dangerous.
Just kidding! Separate them!
There are so so many ways to sort and group your crystals. Play around with different combinations and see which ones feel best to you.
We discuss crystal combinations at the end of this article, so scroll down if you want to combos for Love - Luck - Healing.
For now we take this question in a different direction:
Can you melt crystals together?
You can not melt crystal together. In fact, you can't melt crystal without it losing its crystalline structure.
While it's true that crystal does melt, when it hardens it is no long crystal.
If you melt quartz or another crystal and press it into a mold... the result is fused silica, not crystal, because the crystalline form has been destroyed.
That's why it's impossible to melt crystals together.
If you melt crystals together, the result is fused silica and not multiple types of crystal combined together.
What gemstones should not be mixed?
There are two different angles we want to answer this question from.
The first is a bit more extreme, covering toxicity and physical danger.
The other focuses on clashing metaphysical properties.
Toxicity and physical danger
We have no shortage of articles on our site that cover whether or not a crystal is toxic.
It turns out, there ARE some minerals that are toxic and need to be avoided.
But rather than hit you with some mid-article clickbait, we'll just say there aren't any you need to worry about.
The minerals that are dangerous aren't easy to get, and aren't pretty either. So it's VERY unlikely that you'll ever see them.
Although it's not part of the question, make sure you stay away from crystal dust.
That's not a metaphor for any mind altering substance either!
Do not play with, inhale, or eat crystal dust.
Seems silly to say, but we've got questions before.
Is it OK to stack crystals?
There is one major downside to stacking crystals.
Whether you're working with crystal jewelry or just stacking them for the visual appeal...
They might look like those ring stacking toys we had as babies.
I am sorry about that but selfishly I couldn't be the only one with this connection in their head.
Careful stacking crystals around animals
Just like how stacking rocks on a hike can be dangerous, doing it home can be too.
Now you're probably not trying to stack up to the ceiling, but it's worthing remembering that sharp edged rocks falling on a paw can be really painful.
Crystal combination ideas
Crystal combinations for love
The most obvious thing to do is just grab all the crystals that help with love and pile them together...
Which you could totally do!
But we want to focus on combining powers.
For the power of love, what's a better pairing than new beginnings?
We want to pair honesty with love. Combining the Heart and Throat chakras.
Pick one of the love stones:
- Amethyst
- Lapis Lazuli
- Ruby
- Pink Tourmaline
- Carnelian
And pair it with one of the stones for new beginnings:
- Chrysocolla
- Apophyllite
- Kyanite
- Labradorite
- Malachite
Crystal combinations for luck
For luck we want to pick crystals that resonate with our Crown and Sacral chakras.
Combining what we need with what we want, combining our desire's with our fate.

Crystal combinations for healing
For healing, we're going to want to combine Heart and Solar Plexus stones.
So just as above, pick one of the love stones:

And the combine it with a Solar Plexus friendly stone:
- Citrine
